Payment in Blood -- Elizabeth George
A few nights ago, we watched the Mystery! adaptation of the first Lynley/Havers book, A Great Deliverance. It was great--no surprise there, since Mystery! has been consistently one of the best shows on television for 25 years. Well casted, well acted.
My only quibble was that they slightly changed the motive. But that wasn't actually a problem. The motive itself was seemed so jarring in the book--it was so completely foul that just didn't seem to fit in with the rest of the story. So the change of motive made things flow better. I just tend to be a pill about things like that, even if it's a change for the better. I'll work on that.
Since I enjoyed the show so much, I figured that I should read the next book.
Strangely, I had the same reaction to this one that I had to the first--I liked it, it was pretty well done, but I didn't love it. I'm not feeling a burning desire to read the next one. I'm feeling much more of a desire to read the second Reginald Hill Dalziel/Pascoe book.
At the same time, I'm starting to get much more attached to Lynley and Havers, more wrapped up in the sometimes gritty soap-opera drama of their lives. So I'm sure that I'll eventually pick up the third one. And I'll definitely watch the rest of the Mystery! series.
