But Tobias Wolff is SO GOOD.

From the Kansas City Star (via Bookslut):

Five books are being removed this fall from the Blue Valley School District’s high school curriculum, including two that had been the targets of parents.

This Boy’s Life by Tobias Wolff and Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Myers are among the titles that Blue Valley will remove at the start of this school year. They were two of 14 books challenged in January by a group of parents and community members concerned about allegedly inappropriate content.

Of course, the only Tobias Wolff I've actually read is Old School (It's so good!  Read it!), but if Josh makes it here before seven I'll send him over to the Port library to pick it up for me.

The books that are getting yanked are being pulled because they are "no longer the best fit for the curriculum":

No titles, she added, were removed because of violence, language or sexual content.

In a similar vein, I had a patron upset that her mother-in-law kept giving her son Captain Underpants books.  "Every fifth word in those books is underpants!  They're filled with bad language!  My son keeps saying underpants!  The woman has a Master's degree in English Lit--why would she give him those books???"

Geez, lady.  Get a grip.  What are you going to do when the kid hits middle school?
