Robert Cormier challenged in Pennsylvania?
It looks like The Chocolate War is being challenged yet again, but due to the typos in the letter, I'm not completely positive. Robert Cormier's name is spelled wrong, the book's title is wrong, and as far as I know, he never won a Pulitzer Prize. (I double checked his author biography at Random House, and they didn't mention anything about a Pulitzer. You'd think that if he'd won one, they publisher would make a big deal of it, right? Has a YA author EVER won a Pulitzer?)
Clearly, the letter-writer's heart is in the right place:
The students were told that if the parents contacted the teacher, another book could be assigned. But these gung-ho conservatives have decided that it's not enough for them, and they want the book banned.
But due to the mistakes about the book, the letter doesn't come across as hugely convincing. I also don't know if I'd describe The Chocolate War as a book that explains how to deal with the social pressures of high school. Hopefully there'll be more coverage.
