Geography Club is back!
From American Libraries:
The superintendent of the University Place (Wash.) School District has rescinded her order of a month earlier to remove the gay teen novel Geography Club from the district’s high-school library collections. Patti Banks cited an outpouring of community opinion in favor of the Brent Hartinger book as the primary factor in her decision.
From TheNewsTribune.com:
“I continue to be conditioned to consider student safety above all other things, but I recalculated everything in light of those comments and thought the greater good was served by putting it back in the high school library,” she said in an interview.
But citing the book’s inclusion of a vulgar term and such behaviors as teen drinking and heterosexual relations, Banks remained concerned about its age-appropriateness for eighth- and ninth-graders, the two grades at Curtis Junior High.
She said most book reviews recommend the work for 10th- through 12th-graders and that the book’s main characters were 10th-graders.
Yay Brent! Yay AS IF! Happy endings all around! (Well, except to the middle school students. Sorry kiddos. No Brent for you.)
