Legacies -- F. Paul Wilson
Alright. I think that with this book, I have sated my current need for fun/no-brainer reading. I was kind of disappointed (spoilers follow):
A) I thought it was the first Repairman Jack book. Well, I sort of did. I secretly knew the first one was Tomb, but I found Legacies at Annie's and I just wanted something to read, so even though I secretly knew it was the second one, I pretended like I thought it was the first one. And then I was all disappointed even though I knew the truth the whole time. Does that make sense? Probably not. I doesn't even make that much sense to me.
B) There were no supernatural goings-on. That made me sad.
C) It was a little mushy in parts.
D) Jack's tendency to "pump his fist". It's just dorky. Also, I just don't like the word pump. It freaks me out for some reason.
E) Right before one of the bad guys dies, he says something that is SO wrong, SO fucked-up and creepy, but I think the reader is supposed to feel bad for him. Or something. I don't know. I guess that I sort of did. But only sort of. Ick.
F) Alicia Clayton's decision to destroy the blueprints of working 'broadcast power' was just crappy. There are any number of ways that she could have made them public without crediting her horrible, disgusting, child-abuser father. Couldn't she have just anonymously posted them on the Internet or something? At the very least, the plans could have been destroyed in the fight at the end or something. But her choice -- torching the lab -- was so horribly selfish. (I realize that she had a miserable (to say the least) childhood filled with mega-huge abuse. I do. But on one hand, free power for the whole planet, and on the other, her father was a bastard and a half. I probably shouldn't get so worked up about this, huh?)
However. The scene where Jack goes to reclaim the donated Christmas presents that some jackass had stolen from the crack/AIDS baby clinic... dressed as Santa Claus. He kicks the shit out of someone dressed as SANTA. That pretty much made the whole book worthwhile.
For the most part, I just love Jack. He's a fantastic character, and the bits that annoyed me are far, FAR outweighed by the total entertainment value. So I'll eventually read the others. Starting with the FIRST one, thank you very much.
