I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings challenged yet again.
From The Capitol Online:
The freshman English syllabus is sent home for parents to read at the beginning of each year; parents are asked to sign a form giving their permission to read the books. It warns parents of the content in "Caged Bird" and says students can read another book if their parents simply call their teacher.
"We are very proactive in having an alternative policy, so no one ever needs to feel that they are caught in a work that they have objections to," Ms. Tumminello said. "But there are people that have objections to anything."
Ms. Schmincke said she never saw the syllabus until it was e-mailed to her this week. Even so, it tells parents the book is "age-appropriate," something she feels is misleading.
"I'm finding out now that age-appropriate is subjective," she said. "They feel that this is age appropriate, and I don't."
Dude, I'm all for being understanding of different opinions/beliefs and all, but really. There isn't much about literature that isn't subjective.
