Two links I meant to post yesterday.
- First up was this article at PW (via Jackie on Twitter):
Four members of a library board in West Bend, Wis., were dismissed last week for refusing to remove controversial books from the library’s young adult section—and yesterday, the American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression, the National Coalition Against Censorship, the Association of American Publishers and PEN American Center criticized the firings.
An earlier article from a local paper says that the board members were "not reappointed", which is different than being dismissed (at least in my mind -- being dismissed would suggest that they hadn't been allowed to serve out their terms). BUT. If the city board members voted against reappointing the library board members solely because the library board members refused to vote in favor of pulling those books, it kind of amounts to the same thing, doesn't it?
- And, if you haven't seen it yet: The Art of Penguin Science Fiction. (Thanks for the reminder, HBS Steve.)
