Has anyone read...

Timeless ...Timeless, by Alexandra Monir?

I got in a fight with it before I'd even finished page 4, so I'm wondering if I should set it aside for good, or just get over myself. Help me out, please?

The Timeline of Event Crank:

  • Ooo, pretty cover!
  • Inside flap: Time travel! Gilded Age! Masquerade ball!
  • Back cover: Oh. It's blurbed by the author of that book I didn't really like.
  • ...and by a screenwriter.
  • But the cover is so pretty.
  • I'll try it anyway.
  • The book opens with the main character looking at her reflection in a mirror. I swear, I could go the rest of my life without getting the details of yet another protagonist's appearance from yet another mirror. IT IS SO VERY, VERY DONE.
  • The guy in the dream? HAS SAPPHIRE EYES. I can't do the eyes-as-gemstone thing. It makes me crazy. Not only that, it is also SO VERY, VERY DONE.
  • "But then, Confusion and Mystery had been principal players in her life since the day she was born." Um. I'm sure this will be explained later, but at the time of my reading, it just made me want to punch a wall.
  • And then, this, the passage that put me over the edge into I NEED TO READ SOMETHING THAT IS NOT THIS BOOK: "Sleep or pancakes? That was a no-brainer. Her mouth was already beginning to water at the thought of her mom's specialty." It's just so... awkward.

Anyway, maybe I'm not giving it enough of a chance. Or maybe I'm just being too harsh because I'm not in the right mood for something like this. Or maybe it's coming off as especially unspectacular because I just read The Vespertine.

So, if you've read it, let me know if I should keep going or not.

In the meantime, I'm going to read something else.

Or play DDO.
