Missouri's Republic High School is apparently situated in the same place as the high school in Footloose.
Because, just as in Footloose, Slaughterhouse-Five has been deemed inappropriate for high school readers.
Let's back up.
Remember last September, when Missouri State University's Wesley Scroggins wrote an op-ed claiming—among other things—that Laurie Halse Anderson's Speak was "soft porn"?
Remember that?
Remember her response, and the Speak Loudly hashtag, and all the rest?
Well, almost a year later, ultimately, Wesley Scroggins has gotten his way.
Well, 2/3s of it.
Because while Speak will remain on the shelf at Republic High School in Republic, Missouri, Slaughterhouse-Five and Twenty Boy Summer will not.
That's right: The school board has spoken.
Well, 4/7s of it.
That's right: They held the vote when three members weren't there.
Be sure to read the comments section: According to a poster there, the reconsideration committee voted to keep all three books but the school board—or, 4/7s of it—overruled them.
