Darkness Falls: Immortal Beloved #2 -- Cate Tiernan

Darkness fallsSpoilers about Book One will follow.

450-year-old Nastasya Crowe is still at River's Edge, the commune for immortals trying to Figure Their Crap Out. Due to some serious Make Out Action between Nastasya and the resident Viking God (he isn't actually a god, he just looks like one), things are weird:

Well, about ten days ago we'd had a mutual sudden brain attack and given in to the inexplicable, overwhelming chemistry that had been building between us since my arrival. This had been closely followed by the soul-destroying realizations that his family had killed everyone in my family, and my family had basically killed a lot of his family. That was our shared heritage. And we were on fire for each other. Fun, eh? I mean, when I hear about couples struggling because they're different religions or one's a vegan or something, I think they just need to get some perspective.

And then, of course, things get worse: not only does Nastasya's magic start going blooey—leading her to suspect that she's inherited her parents' darkness—but she also starts having terrifying, violent, bloody dreams about her possibly-evil best friend, Innocencio.

Pros: Everything good I said in my review of the first book stands. As does what I said at Kirkus today.

Cons: I've got nothing.

Recommended to: If you like paranormals, I'd definitely recommend that you give this series a try—Nastasya's got a great perspective (lots of flashbacks of different time periods and so on) and a snappy voice, and it's a much more thoughtful spin on immortality than you'll find in most other places.
