Feed challenged in Virginia.
From the Greene Country Record:
Georgie and Steve North say they are upset that their son, Nicholas, a freshman in the William Monroe Academy, was given the book “Feed,” by M.T. Anderson, to read. They say the book is “trash” and “covered with the F-word.”
Well, I can't deny that Feed has a whole lot of profanity. (It should be noted, though, that the profanity is actually part of the larger picture in the book: the feed/media consumption has contributed to the breakdown of language. In other words, the profanity really is integral to the book. I wouldn't expect that explanation to change the opinions of the challengers, but to simply dismiss the book as 'trash' due to the profanity is short-sighted at best.)
Anyway.
A permission slip was sent home—the offended parents apparently never received it—and a notice about the book's content was posted on the class website. The North's son is now reading the alternate title, To Kill a Mockingbird.
Long story short, even though the North's son has been given an alternate assignment, they're still trying to have the book pulled out of the classroom:
“I want the book removed from the school,” she said. “My child shouldn’t have to read it, nor should any other child have to read this book.”
TL;DR: Parent wants to control their own child's reading? Fine. Parent wants to control the reading of someone else's child? Uncool.
