Blizzard viewing.

So, despite the two and a half feet of snow that got dumped on Ye Olde Homestead, we didn't lose power OR the internet.

HOWEVER, my laptop's adapter crapped out, so for all intents and purposes—minus a bit of tweeting via my old, old Kindle and checking my email on the Playstation*—I was internet-less this weekend.

TEH HORROR.

So, as I couldn't treat you to a play-by-play rundown of what we watched IN REALTIME, here's a round-up:

Moonrise Kingdom:

While I totally understand why it was so popular in the kidlitosphere, what with the young love and the children's books and the reading aloud, this one left me mostly cold. I enjoyed watching it, and it had a great look. But... I felt like it had more style than heart, and a few days later, it hasn't stayed with me at all. (But I *still* think there's an argument to be made about it all being in Sam's head.)

Looper:

I loved this one, full stop. That's not very surprising, considering how much I loved Brick, but MAN, I was impressed at JGL's ability to channel Bruce Willis. (He had extensive makeup to look right, but it was more than that: the way he talked, walked, his attitude, everything.) But that was before they started interacting—when they started interacting, their personalities and mannerisms started diverging (or something), which I also thought was cool.

Also, I loved that it was a super-fun time-travel movie with a great look, but that there was substance, too, and it also didn't get bogged down too deeply in the nitty-gritty of the time-travel itself: it was more about the characters and about People and Choice and Life and all that good stuff.

Submarine:

Coming-of-age story written and directed by the ever-adorbs Richard Ayoade. It's quiet, and it's definitely not going to be for everyone, but Josh and I both liked it quite a lot. It's quirky, but not so in-your-face quirky that I wanted to punch it in the face. Bonus: Sally Hawkins is in it, and she's always awesome.

Todd and the Book of Pure Evil:

Netflix has been telling us we'd like it for ages now, and we finally gave it a try. Basic premise: loser-y stoner metalhead finds Book of Pure Evil, uses it, accidentally almost wipes out his entire high school, tries to destroy BoPE, it FLIES AWAY and wrecks havok every week while he and his new-found friends try to stop it. Lots of intestines, extremely silly, and not at all politically correct. Oh, and this will likely help you figure out whether or not it's for you: Jason Mewes (of Kevin Smith's Jay and Silent Bob fame) plays the advice-dispensing janitor.

Lost Girl:

We watched this before the blizzard (and if you follow me on Twitter, you probably already know that, as I tweeted about it ad nauseum (sorry)), but as we loved it so much, I figured it was worth a mention. Josh and I are both totally, totally addicted to it. SUPER DUPER MEGA FUN.
