Dear Nature, I am sorry.

I am sorry that my cats insist on playing leapfrog with real frogs. I am even more sorry that they continue the game until the frog has died of exhaustion, heart failure, and/or blood loss.

I am sorry about the dragonflies, the luna moth, the snakes, the chipmunks, the mice, that poor mole, and about all of the birds. (I am not sorry about the houseflies.)

I AM SORRY ABOUT THE BABY RABBIT, WHOSE BRUTAL MURDER PROMPTED THIS MUCH-OVERDUE APOLOGY. I AM EVEN MORE SORRY THAT WE DON'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO HIS BACK FEET.

I am sorry that they are unrepentant.

Most of all, I am sorry that THE KILLING IS LIKELY TO CONTINUE.
