Hammy and Gerbee: Mummies at the Museum, by Wong Herbert Yee
Well, Wong Herbert Yee’s Hammy and Gerbee: Mummies at the Museum is just delightful.
Now, granted, it’s pretty much tailor-made for me.
After all, I am a huge fan of:
• Rodents
• Horror movie twins
• Horror movie twins who are also know-it-alls
• Elementary school buddy comedies
• Nonsense in museums
• UNEXPECTED BACKMATTER!
Told episodically, Mummies at the Museum follows best friends Hammy and Gerbee as they chase the mail truck down to find out who their teacher is this year¹, as they walk to school², as they compete with their classmates in a FUN POP QUIZ³, and as they go to (spoiler) the science museum.
It’s clever, it’s funny, it’s silly, it’s warm, it’s low-stakes.
Which are all things I need in my life right now.
I am borderline GUTTED now that I know it’s the only one, I was really really hoping for a million more?
See a few more spreads here.

¹They’re delighted when they’re both placed in the same classroom—they are distinctly LESS delighted that mouse twins Hanna and Anna are ALSO in the same classroom.
²And try and fail to ditch Hanna and Anna.
³Winner gets to choose whether the class goes to the art museum or the science museum, which is some SERIOUS POWER to put in these little goobers’ hands!

Think I’m joking about Hanna and Anna being Horror Movie Twins??
In the following images, we see ALL THE HALLMARKS of the character archetype!!:

• LOOMING SHADOWS
• Compared to predators TWICE ON THE SAME PAGE
• Not shown, but bonus: lots of wonderful drive-by know-it-all-ing
