So many possibilities today!
• The Black God's Drums, by P. Djèlí Clark: I’m really upset that today is a workday, because I just want to sit down and read this one RIGHT. NOW?? Alt-history set in Civil War-era New Orleans… with airships and sky pirates and a fight to save the city from a mysterious weapon! Starred review at Publisher’s Weekly & an Alex Award winner.
• A House Is a Body: Stories, by Shruti Swamy: Short story collection on all (<—okay, a LOT) of last year’s Highly Anticipated lists. Starred review from Kirkus.
• The Empress of Salt and Fortune, by Nghi Vo: The publisher copy describes this as “feminist high fantasy and an indictment of monarchy,“ which is basically all I need to hear, but it is ALSO blurbed by Seanan McGuire AND it’s another book that hit a bunch of Anticipated & Top Ten & Best Of lists last year. Based on the description, my gut says it’ll probably be a good fit for folks who appreciated Maria Turtschaninoff’s Maresi and Naondel.
• Ninth House, by Leigh Bardugo: Dark magic and murder at Yale! (Why can I never resist murder-y fantasies set in boarding schools and colleges??)
• Real Friends, by Shannon Hale and LeUyen Pham: AHHHHH I LOVE THIS BOOK SO MUCH!! I still maintain that I wish I’d had it as a source of much-needed comfort during my miserable fifth-grade year. (The follow-up, Best Friends, is also fantastic.)
