Twilight -- Stephenie Meyer
At times, the main character, Bella, reminded me of Mia Thermopolis. She falls over a lot. She was also, on occasion, Buff-ully sarcastic—she referred to Edward (the love interest) as a "Stupid, shiny Volvo owner". (Taken out of context, I guess that doesn't work the same way. But trust me. It was a total Joss Whedon line).
But that was only occasionally.
Okay, so I wasn't hugely impressed with the writing. There's only so many times that you can refer to someone's skin as "ivory" or "marble". I get it. The guy is very pale and very cold.
And, of course, very beautiful. I also got a little tired of the word "perfect".
That said, I read the whole thing yesterday. It was one of those books where I glanced down and realized that I'd read two hundred pages in what seemed like fifteen minutes. Couldn't stop.
It'll be really popular, especially among girls that love the Libba Bray books. Romance-y with a twist.
The twist being, in this case, that the male lead is a vampire. (Who, I was relieved to find, looked nothing like Angel—he is all tortured like Angel, though). Stephenie Meyer has a very new set of rules for vampires. I liked them, though purists might not.
