Perks of Being a Wallflower on the chopping block. Again.
From the Tuscon Citizen (via Bookslut):
The state's education chief wants schools to ban a book he has never read after receiving a complaint from an Apache Junction grandmother.
"The Perks of Being a Wallflower" contains numerous sexual references, including a scene where a girl is forced to have oral sex with a boy during a party.
That was the only page that Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne read after receiving the complaint.
Brilliant. So obviously, they should pull Speak, too. And Inexcusable.
Oh, and while you're at it, don't forget to pull Geography Club for the "dangerous Internet behavior". And Freewill & Looking for Alibrandi for references to suicide. Oh, and definitely ban Whale Talk for child abuse and swearing. Shall I go on?
(Oh, and PS: Call me paranoid, but I suspect that this is less of an anti-rape thing and more of an anti-gay thing. Rather like the Geography Club situation.)
