Flush -- Carl Hiassen
I really dig the cover art on this one, even though it's slightly misleading. No actual toilets get chucked into the ocean. As you may have gathered from the title, Flush has a lot of poop in it. I wonder if the Captain Underpants detractors will like it...
The premise in a nutshell: Noah's dad gets thrown in jail for sinking a floating casino. He did it because the horrible cigar-smoking owner, Dusty Muleman, saves money by illegally dumping the boat's sewage tank into the ocean.
So. Noah's dad is in jail, his mother has pretty much HAD IT and is thinking about divorce (this isn't, by far, the first time her husband has ended up in jail due to his temper), and lots and lots of poop is still being pumped into the ocean. Also, Dusty Muleman's son, Jasper, really has it in for Noah.
It was fun -- pretty much worth reading if only for Shelly, the tattooed bartender that helps Noah bring Dusty down. I liked Hoot more -- quite a bit more -- but it was still fun. I do think it could come off as preachy to some people, but the environmentalist message didn't particularly annoy me. Maybe because Noah & Co. are already concerned about the environment. They don't learn about how important the environment is as the story goes -- they already know. It's usually only when there's a big, obvious lesson learned that a book will come off as preachy. For me, anyway.
