Instead of Three Wishes: Magical Short Stories -- Megan Whalen Turner

Fairy tales work best when simply told. This collection is, not surprisingly, super. I re-read it periodically. 

My favorites:

"Factory": It's just this nice little ghost story/romance. The romance is my favorite kind -- one that develops partially due to a mutual love of books and food. The larger background story is also really, really nice. In a strange way.

"Aunt Charlotte and the NGA Portraits": I'm always a sucker for selkie stories. And for cool cabbies.

"Instead of Three Wishes": Never, ever fails to crack me up. I love every single thing about this story.
